Vance and I set up on a dry river bottom and called this old Rio down a tall fence to our decoys. The old gobbler was very embarassed at the reception that he got. He got all red in the face. Red oak Mother Clucker call. Vance got in front of a rather large flock of hens and gobblers and coaxed them near enough for a shot at this old South Texas Rio. Mother Clucker call is his favorite.

Vance got to the mountains at dark thirty and the wind was blowing so hard that it blew his box call out of his hands and he had to chase it a half mile and when he finally caught it his hat flew off. Later that day ( after running down his hat) the wind died down and he called in two nice Merriams and this one bit the dust. Mother Clucker again. Tara Griffis called up two nice toms and managed to ruin ones afternoon with a nice head shot. She called up another nice gobbler about 30 minutes before but could not get her gun up for the shot because of a hen about 20 feet away that had eyes the size of pie plates. She won't use anything but her Red Oak Mother Clucker call.

My big Arkansas Eastern with a 11 1/4 inch beard and 7/8inch spurs. Shawn (Punkin) Blackard did a great job of calling this bird in for me. I think he is probably the best turkey hunter and caller that I have ever had the honor of hunting with. DOES THE VIRGIN HEN WORK? Just ask Shawn and he'll be glad to tell you all about it. Thanks Shawn for helping an old Colorado boy get his turkey. Used a Virgin Hen and Purple heart call. My oldest brother Joe Griffis with his first gobbler ever. He was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer last summer and only given 6 weeks to live. We had the honer of going with him on his first successful turkey hunt. His grandson Shawn Blackard did the calling again using a Purple heart Peyton's Putter and what a great job he did. *UPDATE* Joe died this past January and I miss him. I hope he's sitting on a creek bank in the shade in Heaven dragging out Blue Gill like you've never seen.

Vance took this nice Arkansas Eastern with the help of Shawn Blackard, caller extrordinaire. He had a 10 7/8 inch beard and 1 1/8 inch spurs. Shawn used every trick in the book and finally coaxed him close enough for the shot. Bo and Chris Neely worked on these Eastern wild turkeys for quite a while but they hung up and wouldn't come in. Finally Bo had to pull a trick out of his hat to fool the old gobblers into coming close enough for a shot. Bo and Chris both used the Virgin Hen call. There's three generations of Neelys enjoying the excitement of a great morning turkey hunt.
